Braintree Public Schools Summer Information

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I hope you and your student are enjoying the conclusion to a productive year with the Braintree Public Schools. Throughout the year, students had many opportunities to read and listen to books read aloud during the school day. Your support for those same reading experiences at home will help your child continue to grow as a reader, writer, thinker, and learner.

As you plan for the summer, please consider the literacy experiences your child will have in these months away from the classroom.

For students at the elementary level, you’ll find a list below of suggested books for your family to enjoy this summer. The first list suggests read-aloud books, and the other lists suggest books for your child to read alone or for shared reading with you. They are arranged by grade level and each grade includes a range of reading levels and genres.

For students at the secondary level, the assigned book lists and the note-taking/reader response forms are also available below this text. Students must read at least two books. One of these books must come from the assignment sheets below; the other can be any selection you and your student choose together. At the middle schools, all students entering a particular grade will read the same book. The titles were chosen for their anti-bullying, pro-compassion themes. Students will participate in lessons and activities on their common book when they return to school. At the high school, one of the books must come from the grade-level list. Students will take a short test on that book in September.

The Thayer Public Library is a valuable (and free!) local resource. As you and your student browse the books, the district recommends the “Five Finger Rule” to assist with selection:

· Choose a page or passage of about 100 words and ask your child to read it.

· When he or she comes to a word that he or she cannot pronounce correctly or doesn’t know, put up one finger.

· If you get to five fingers before the end of the passage, the book is too difficult for your child to read alone.

If you need help in selecting books, do not hesitate to ask the librarian!

For those of you planning travel this summer, consider going beyond the bookshelves and print pages to include audio books in your child’s experience. These are available at the library on CD or on iTunes (ready to go right onto an iPod!). While audio books are no replacement for reading, they are a wonderful supplement, especially when experienced with a copy of the actual book.

As you explore these opportunities, remember that summer reading is for pleasure! I hope you and your child find many enjoyable books and stories to be part of your summer. I look forward to working with you throughout the year to assist with your child’s literacy development.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Fredericks
