Braintree Public Schools News

November 12, 2009

Dear Parents:

I am writing to inform you about procedures we will be following again this year in the event we encounter a large amount of snow.

As always, our primary goal will be to ensure the safety of our students. We will also do everything we can to keep our schools open with minimal disruption.

In the past, due to the snow on our side streets, it was necessary to establish alternate bus routes. In addition, when it was not possible to have all of the sidewalks cleared, we encouraged parents to carpool in order to get their children to school. Although not an ideal situation, the above arrangements did allow us to keep schools open.

Attached please find a listing of alternate bus stops which may be used from time to time due to snow on the roads. We will be using our automated telephone system to notify all parents of school closings and alternate bus routes. If necessary, we will initiate delayed openings to allow additional time to clear the roads.

Please think about how your child will get to school in the event he or she is unable to use the sidewalks or must walk to an alternate bus stop.

We hope that we do not have to implement any of the above procedures this year. However, with the above plan in place, we feel that we can minimize the need to close school. As always, parents have the prerogative to keep their children home if they feel weather conditions warrant it. Students will not be penalized on those days for absences or tardiness.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support in this matter.

Sincerely,

Peter A. Kurzberg
Superintendent of Schools
