News from the Food Services Director:
Summer is a good opportunity to experience your local fare! Obviously,
fruits and vegetables can be easily accessed from your grocery stores,
but a farmer's market offers you the unique opportunity of eating the
freshest produce while also supporting your local farmers. In fact, Massachusetts
is home to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. During the month
of June: beets, peas, broccoli, and strawberries are available. In July,
beans, blueberries, carrots, corn, eggplant, garlic, onions, peppers,
potatoes, raspberries, and tomatoes are available. Lastly, in August
leeks and melons are available. So get to your local farmer's markets
or to your local farm and harvest your own! Braintree has its own farmer's
market
Sustainable Braintree's Farmers Market will operate on Saturday mornings
from 9 am to 1 pm from June 26, 2010 through October 30, 2010 with a
special indoor Thanksgiving Market on November 20, 2010.
The Market is
situated on the newly refurbished Braintree Town Hall Mall on Washington
Street which is in the town’s historic district. This
convenient, central location is less than 1/4 mile off Route 3, near the
Braintree split, and walking distance from the MBTA station.
For more information, contact the Braintree Farmers Market committee
at food@sustainablebraintree.org
Also, check out "Healthy Tips for Summer Eats" and
a recipe for making your own hummus. Stay nutritious over the summer!
Braintree
Public Schools offer breakfast every day for only $1.00 (free or
$.30 reduced price for those who qualify for free or reduced price
lunch)!
School lunch is now $2.25 per meal for secondary schools, and $2.00
for elementary schools. Check out the menu ahead of time to see what’s
being served. For convenience, you may prepay for lunch, breakfast
and ala carte items if you choose.
We look forward to another great year of serving the students of
Braintree Public Schools nutritious school meals.
