Safe and Drug Free Schools
Title IV: Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant 2007-2008
To meet the federal requirements of this grant, the district must submit a
comprehensive plan for drug and violence prevention that describes activities
or programs to be funded. The district hereby assures the Massachusetts Department
of Education that pursuant to requirements in NVLB, Title IV, Part A, the district
will:
1. Develop and implement a program plan for violence and/or substance abuse
prevention
2. Use funds for effective programs
3. Use funds in coordination with other funding sources
4. Use funds for programs that convey clear messages
5. Develop a plan to ensure a safe and secure school district
6. Conduct timely and meaningful consultation
7. Promote parent involvement
8. Provide for public review of application and waiver requests
2007-2008 Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant Summary
Goal: To support and promote a safe and drug free community.
Objectives:
1. Reduce incidents of peer conflict at the elementary schools.
a. Continue to implement the Second Step violence prevention
program in grades K-5 that:
• recognizes and rewards prosocial involvement by
teaching children how to deal with emotions, resist impulsive behaviors,
resolve conflicts, learn
problem solving skills and understand consequences of their actions.
• reinforces healthy beliefs and clear standards
for behavior by teaching the causes of conflict, influences that promote
and discourage violence and
the consequences of violence.
2. Reduce incidents involving drug use at the middle and high
school by
a. Continued use of the Michigan Model curriculum using modules relating to
substance abuse in grades 5, 8, and 9 that:
• recognizes and rewards prosocial involvement by teaching skills of communicating
assertively, refusal, personal and social problem-solving and accessing resources
• reinforces
healthy beliefs and clear standards for behavior by teaching students the
rules and laws related to drugs, legal
issues related to drug
use among adolescents, how to promote drug free messages to peers and apply
a personal commitment to living drug free.
